& Stratton Briggs & Stratton, Milwaukee needed
a high quality lubricant that would help them obtain a favorable
grinding ratio on their CBN wheel of the CNC lathes.
A high-performance grinding fluid was needed to perform three essential
functions:
- Lubricate sufficiently with little extreme pressure and boundary
lubrication
- Dissipate heat at the wheel and workspace interface
- Maintain wheel cleanliness through good swarf-carrying capacity,
detersive action and filtration ability to less and five um.
T o
meet these needs Benz Oil created Benzgrind HP 22. This custom designed
lubricant provides excellent oxidation resistance and remains stable
under the extreme operating conditions of high-speed crankshaft
grinding. Long term, the lubricant will reduce the potential for
preferential depletion and help maintain minimal friction and increase
optimal removal rates while maximizing the abrasive integrity of
the CBN wheel.
"Benzgrind HP 22 allows us to produce more shafts, more precisely,
faster," said John Edwards, project manager at Briggs &
Stratton. "Our throughput times have gone from as much as two
weeks to as little as one hour. Our quality-control improved dramatically
and our costs have been substantially reduced." Benzgrind HP
22 is dispensed through two custom applicators on each wheel.
The first applicator is a high-pressure system that applies oil
directly to the face of the wheel through a small nozzle at 250
psi. This prevents the wheel from becoming overloaded with micron-size
chips. The second system utilizes a high-pressure/high-volume stream
of oil applied to the wheel/workpiece interface at a rate of 150
gpm. This cools and lubricates the wheel while flushing chips out
of the grinding zone.
After completing the production cycle, Benzgrind is filtrated through
a diatomaceous-earth filter system to eliminate grinding swarf.
The system incorporates 1050 gpm/250 psi coolant delivery with an
18,000 gal. holding tank capacity.
